Q: What is physical therapy, and how can it help me?

A: Physical therapy is a field of science that assists patients in recovering from injuries or movement impairments. At Capitol PT, we work with patients who suffer from many conditions, including:

• Body injuries of the neck, shoulder, back, hip, knee, ankle, foot, and more
• Post-surgical conditions
• Balance impairments
• Muscle weakness

Physical therapists use non-invasive treatments such as exercise and manual therapy to reduce pain and restore mobility. These treatments are based on evidence proven in medical literature.

Q: How are your physical therapists trained?

A: Physical therapists are required by law to graduate from an accredited Physical Therapy program. Physical therapists study at the graduate level, after completing undergraduate study in the basic sciences. Today, a physical therapist is required to have at least a Master’s or Clinical Doctorate degree to enter the physical therapy workforce. Capitol PT requires our physical therapists to complete graduate level Physical Therapy programs and pass the Wisconsin State Licensing Board Exam.

Q: Do I need a prescription for therapy, or can I just schedule an appointment?

A: In Wisconsin, you are not required to have a written prescription to be evaluated by a Physical Therapist. Many insurance companies, though, require a written prescription for reimbursement of services. Wisconsin is a Direct Access state for physical therapists and we can assist you in obtaining an order for PT from your primary care provider if necessary for insurance coverage. The staff at Capitol PT is trained to answer your questions according to your particular insurance.

Prescriptions may be from one of the following types of physicians:

  • MD – Medical Doctor of all specialties
  • DO – Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
  • DPM – Doctor of Podiatric Medicine
  • DDS - Dentist, including Oral Surgeons
  • DC – Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine
  • NP – Nurse Practitioner

Q: What should I expect during my first visit?

A: We ask that all new patients arrive 15 minutes early for their initial appointment to allow adequate time to complete the necessary forms and Privacy Act paperwork (Online forms available). Your physical therapist will review the information provided by your referring physician and examine your medical history. Based on this information, your therapist will perform the appropriate physical therapy examination, develop an individualized treatment plan, and begin interventions.

Q: How long will my appointment take?

A: Your initial visit will take from 1 to 1.5 hours, because of the time spent completing paperwork. All other scheduled appointments typically last 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the involvement and severity of your impairment.

Q: What should I wear to my appointment?

A: We ask all of our patients to dress in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for all of their physical therapy appointments. We use gowns to provide necessary coverage of shoulders, neck, and back during treatments that expose these areas. We offer treatment rooms for privacy to change.

Q: Will you communicate with my physician?

A: Capitol PT takes pride in its relationships with referring physicians. Our therapists communicate with your physician about changes in treatment plans and follow-up appointments with the physician, or when discovering unforeseen issues related to treatment. Our referring physicians appreciate and often comment on our excellent communication with regards to their patients.
